About

A nonprofit preserving culture through waves of community work.

Our Story

Torongo of California was officially incorporated as a Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation under the California Secretary of State on March 20, 2025 (Document No. B20250038486), but our roots go much deeper. For over two decades, the founding members of Torongo have worked tirelessly to introduce the works and philosophy of Kazi Nazrul Islam to Western academic and cultural audiences.

What We Do

  • Organize cultural events celebrating Bengali music, dance, poetry, and literature

  • Support academic initiatives through the Kazi Nazrul Islam Endowment Fund at CSUN

  • Facilitate lectures and symposia on Nazrul's literary and musical contributions

  • Nurture the next generation of Bengali-American artists and scholars

  • Build bridges between the Bangladeshi diaspora and mainstream American cultural institutions

Our Name

Torongo (তরঙ্গ) is the Bengali word for wave. Just as a wave carries energy across vast distances, Torongo carries the energy of Bengali heritage across continents.

Our Partnership with CSUN In 2003, working alongside California State University, Northridge, Torongo helped establish the Kazi Nazrul Islam Endowment Fund — a landmark achievement in bringing Bengali cultural scholarship to American higher education. This partnership supports a lectureship program that, since its revival in 2024, has been actively running again after a brief pause during the pandemic years.
